He devotes revealing chapters to power in its relation to images. Mitchell describes the consequences in his analysis of Oliver Stone's film ß'K. 397), that is, as an accept able document of what was happening in the world and, at the same time, as just a story offered for entertainment- a fateful association of attitudes, all too familiar from the responses of televi sion audiences. Mitchell points out that when newsreels were a regular part of movie programs, they were seen as "just another kind of movie" (p. What we are facing here is a curious fu sion of two contradictory attitudes: pic tures are taken as presenting "real" ob jects, and treated as though one were facing denizens of the real world, but at the same time they are recognized and treated as mere figments. It is all but spontaneous in children's and early forms of art and is all the more common in later styles. One might think that such a translation requires a sophisticated convention, but this is not the case. This recogni tion involves an awareness of the formal traits by which the medium represents its subject, an acceptance of the par ticular visual language by which the pic ture maker communicates. Much more frequently and more inter estingly, pictures are taken to merely "stand for" the actual objects because the viewer recognizes pictures as being products of their makers. Pictures only rarely produce illu sions, that is, the deceptive impression that one is facing actual physical space. But Velazquez's Meninas, an ex ample to which thinkers of Mitchell's generation are magnetically drawn, pre sents indeed a whirlpool of contradic tory viewpoints. In earlier forms of art, for ex ample, in Byzantine murals or in children's art, there is no such illusionistic pretense and therefore no contra diction. Only then, for example can figures looking at the observer acknowledge the presence of someone who does not belong in the scene. It is worth noting that such contra dictions arise in representational art only when it claims to show the depth of three-dimensional space. The sim plest examples are those of multistability (as psychologists call them), the tricky back-and-forth of fig ure and ground or of competing double subjects, such as the duck-rab bit, which acquired philosophical citi zenship through Wittgenstein. He highlights the problem of representation by dealing with what he calls metapictures, that is, pictures not unifiable in a single visual percept be cause of inner contradictions in their perspective or concealment of the vi sual presence of something. In an introductory chapter he does deal with pictures by them selves. His longstanding fascination with im ages operates mostly from the perspec tive of language, the relations of words to pictures. In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:Ī professor at the University of Chi cago in the departments of English and art, Mitchell can be described as one of die "literary scholars moonlighting in the visual arts," as he calls them (p.

You can autotrace the the ligature, import the ligature from another editor or draw it using a grid. Cut and paste from existing glyphs would be half decent at least but that doesnt work either. BirdFont gives you several options for creating the new glyph. Also there doesnt seem to be a way to import the 2 glyphs you are putting into a ligature. Just don't redistribute it and try to claim it as yours, because nacho cheese! (well its possible you could be Tuomas, but I doubt it.). If you are looking for an easy, pourable batter bowl, check out this Le Creuset one I have. Whisk the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, sugar, nutmeg, and cinnamon together in a large bowl set aside. To be clear, this eggnog is non-alcoholic! You can also use the traditional one as well – I would just recommend adding more nutmeg and cinnamon to the batter. If you’re wondering what kind of eggnog to use, I like the Southern Comfort vanilla spice one that is in most dairy aisles in December. Plus, it’s a cute topper for your cake stack if you decide to shape them like a Christmas tree like I did. The whipped cream is optional but it is fast! I love the decadence of homemade whipped cream, especially since it doesn’t melt all over the place and holds firm. Plus, no need for additional sugar in these cakes! The eggnog flavor is not overpowering – it’s more of a slightly sweet taste with warm cinnamon and spices. This recipe came out reaaaallly close (from what I can remember). These pancakes require one bowl and 10 ingredients, so they don’t make a big mess at all! Years ago, we used to get a boxed mix of eggnog pancakes from Williams Sonoma, and I always thought they were so delicious. These eggnog pancakes can be made before it’s time to open presents. So now it sits cutely (is that even a word?) in the nursery collecting dust. I had to have one of those space age modern looking rockers that I thought our baby would just love because it was stylish… but not a chance. It’s hideous looking and massive. I was one of those, I’ll never let baby equipment take over the house type of person pre baby. There was a time that I protested the swing. If you follow me on Instagram when Parker slept for nearly 2 hours ALL BY HIMSELF in his cousin’s swing, this mama was like…we’re going out to purchase the swing pronto!! I tried to get baby to sleep, all to no avail. We went through a rough patch, from birth through 7 weeks where the only place baby would sleep was in our arms…he wasn’t picky on who he’d sleep with, but he was a serious around-the-clock-hold-me-baby. This girl does not know what to do with herself… the babe is peacefully sleeping again. Despite the fact that there’s a ridiculous among of things going on in the game, it still looks like it could be quite a fun time. However, DokeV is a much more lighthearted game, as can be grasped fairly quickly from the infectious musical beat of the new trailer. Pearl Abyss is well known for its previous work on titles like sandbox action-MMORPG Black Desert. There were teases and reveals as far back as 2019, but nothing quite like this latest showing. Pearl Abyss has been working on DokeV for more than a little while. You can see the ridiculously wild trailer for yourself just below. You do get your hands on unusual pocket monster pals such as a bear in boxing gloves, a walking alarm clock, and more, but DokeV also shows kids skating on skateboards and rollerblades, driving around the city in small cars or across the water on jetskis, utilizing their powers to turn into heroes, and engaging in action-RPG combat with a variety of enemy beings. The musical gameplay video for DokeV was revealed during the Gamescom 2021 Opening Night Live presentation on August 25, 2021. DokeV has you taking on the role of a child that gets your hands on the power of curious pocket monsters, but the skating, open world exploration, superhero antics, and action combat show this game is going to be so much more than just a run-of-the-mill critter-collecting adventure. As we’ve come into an era of gaming where other developers are more confident in trying to capture the magic of what Pokemon has given us and put their own spin on it, we got an interesting reveal at Gamescom 2021 from South Korean developer Pearl Abyss. The Supreme Court reversed the lower court’s decision granting qualified immunity to the corrections officers because “any reasonable officer should have realized that Taylor’s conditions of confinement offended the Constitution.”ĭavid H. Riojas, brought by a prisoner who was kept in a pair of “shockingly unsanitary cells”-one of which was “covered, nearly floor to ceiling, in massive amounts of feces”-for six days. Advocates viewed that step as an indication that the Court would take no action on qualified immunity, and turned their attention to Congress and the states.īut then, on November 2, 2020, the Supreme Court issued a short, unsigned opinion in a case called Taylor v. In June 2020, amid this fervor and speculation, the Supreme Court declined to hear all the pending qualified-immunity cases on its docket. Senator Tim Scott called qualified-immunity reform a “ poison pill” that was “off the table.” But congressional Republicans opposed these legislative efforts. Bills to eliminate qualified immunity were introduced in the House and Senate. Protesters across the country carried hand-drawn signs calling for an end to qualified immunity. And then George Floyd was killed by Derek Chauvin. In its 2019–20 term, the Supreme Court took months to decide whether to hear one or more of the many qualified-immunity cases pending before it-a hesitation some took as a sign that the Court might finally act. Legal scholars and advocacy groups have repeatedly petitioned the Supreme Court to abolish or reform qualified-immunity doctrine. Read: How to actually fix America’s police Judge Don Willett, a Donald Trump appointee, wrote that “qualified immunity smacks of unqualified impunity, letting public officials duck consequences for bad behavior-no matter how palpably unreasonable-so long as they were the first to behave badly.” In lower courts, judges appointed by Republicans and Democrats have offered scathing critiques of the doctrine. Justice Sonia Sotomayor criticized qualified immunity in 2015 for “sanctioning a ‘shoot first, think later’ approach to policing.” In 2017, Justice Clarence Thomas suggested that his colleagues reconsider qualified-immunity doctrine because it has no legal basis. Yet despite the strength of qualified immunity, its armor has begun to crack. Courts dismissed civil suits against all of these officers-not because they hadn’t violated the Constitution, but because there wasn’t a prior case in which officers had violated the Constitution in the same way, leaving no “clearly established” precedent (by the Supreme Court’s definition) that the behavior was wrong. Qualified immunity has been granted to officers who sicced a police dog on a man who had surrendered and had his hands in the air, officers who shot a 10-year-old boy in the leg while trying to hit his unthreatening dog, and officers who stole $225,000 in cash and rare coins when executing a warrant. Every year, they have issued a steady stream of opinions granting qualified immunity to law-enforcement officers who have engaged in egregious behavior. The Court has repeatedly chided lower courts for denying qualified-immunity motions, explaining in a 2017 opinion that it had “issued a number of opinions reversing federal courts in qualified immunity cases” in recent years, but that it was “again necessary to reiterate the longstanding principle that ‘clearly established law’ should not be defined ‘at a high level of generality,’” and should instead “be ‘particularized’ to the facts of the case.” Instead, the keystone is whether officers violated what the Court calls “ clearly established law.” And, in recent years, the Court has insisted that the law is only “clearly established” if the Supreme Court, the court of appeals for that jurisdiction, or a consensus of federal courts around the country has previously held virtually identical conduct to be unconstitutional.Įric Schnurer: Congress is going to have to repeal qualified immunity Today, qualified-immunity doctrine has nothing to do with whether officers acted in good faith. When the Supreme Court first created qualified immunity, in 1967, it was described as a protection for officers acting in good faith. But in the past few months, following a summer of protests against police violence, the Supreme Court seems to be quietly changing its message. Police, the Court has argued, need “breathing room to make reasonable but mistaken judgments about open legal questions.” The trouble is that no matter how egregious the conduct might seem, so long as a plaintiff cannot find a prior court decision declaring similar behavior unconstitutional, a court cannot hold officers accountable. For years, the Supreme Court has sent a clear message to lower courts: Police officers can’t be sued for violating someone’s constitutional rights unless the specific actions at issue have previously been held unconstitutional. While the term "TV marathon" was used frequently in the 1950s, "TV binge" rarely appeared in English language periodicals from 1952-1986 and was most commonly used as a side effect of technological improvements in broadcast television around multi-game sporting events such as the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament, the Olympics, and the World Cup. Sports editor Ed Danforth used the term to describe a Bob Hope– Bing Crosby telethon to raise money for the U.S. newspaper on July 27, 1952, in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. They proposed that the notion of binge-watching should be expanded to include both the prolonged sit (watching 3 or more episodes in a row, in one sitting) and the accelerated consumption of an entire season (or seasons) of a show, one episode at a time, over several days. Others suggested that what is normally called binge-watching in fact refers to more than one type of TV viewing experience. Some researchers have argued that binge-watching should be defined based on the context and the actual content of TV show.
